Dr. Kelly Ablard

Conservationist, Researcher, Educator, Aromatherapist

Kelly Ablard holds a Doctorate in Biology, an MSc in Conservation, a BSc in Zoology (cum laude), and is a certified aromatherapist. As founder and Director of Airmid Institute, she is dedicated to the global education, research, and conservation of aromatic medicinal plants, and to helping to protect and promote uses of traditional medicine in Indigenous communities. She has conducted research in conservation biology, molecular genetics, chemical ecology, behavioural ecology, and ethnobotany. Her work has been highlighted by Canadian Geographic, the British Broadcasting Company (BBC), and published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. She identified traditional uses of 60+ aromatic medicinal plants across northern, central, and southern Peru, worked to help protect threatened slow and slender lorises, reported on the ingenuity of tool use by threatened orangutans, and made a novel discovery of how small wasps rely on individual chemical signatures to mediate their mating ritual.

Dr. Ablard speaks worldwide about the conservation and sustainable management of essential and carrier oil-bearing plants, and shares her ongoing work in Peru with the Shipibo on the development and implementation of the Toucan Project (named after the tropical bird which, apart from its bright colours, is known for dispersing endangered rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) seeds). She volunteers as a Community Scientist for Science World (Vancouver, BC), and founded the Vancouver Community College Urban Apothecary Learning Garden – an educational venue for at-risk youth and culturally-diverse students.

Kelly served a decade on the Board of the British Columbia Alliance of Aromatherapy (BCAOA) and was honoured with the BCAOA 2016 Achievement of Excellence Award. She currently sits on the Board of the United Plant Savers, is Co-chair of the International Committee on Sustainability of Aromatic Plants used in Aromatherapy and Natural Perfumery and is Co-owner and Co-operator of Essence of Thyme College of Holistic Studies in Canada.

Patricia Brooks

Patricia Brooks is the founder and editor-in-chief of Aromatherapy Thymes magazine, an educational and lifestyle magazine. Patricia’s passion for aromatherapy led her to launch aromatherapythymes.com in the late '90s as a resource website for consumers interested in essential oils and their integration into the art and science of aromatherapy. When response to the website was overwhelming, the print magazine was a natural progression.

Patricia has participated in panel discussions and given workshops on essential oil safety at Whole Foods markets and at The Living Beauty Foundation (a foundation for women living with cancer), and other organizations in the Los Angeles area. She continues to be an advocate and champion for the small farmers and local distributors of essential oils. In her own words: The gift of aromatherapy was given to me; it is my responsibility to give it to others.

She loves teaching people how to use herbs simply, effectively and joyfully. She believes that learning to use local plants helps us as humans to heal, helps us to appreciate our environment and helps us to love and cherish the earth.

Vivienne grew up with an appreciation of natural medicine because during the Second World War two of her relatives attended a naturopath who helped them greatly with very serious medical conditions. The naturopath even successfully treated diphtheria when one of her relatives contracted it for a second time. These relatives had their ration books in the health food shop, at least 50 years before health foods became main-stream!

After attending an herbalist in Edinburgh, Vivienne knew that herbal medicine was her calling. In 2003 she qualified from a degree course run by the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, the oldest body of professional herbalists in the world. Vivienne loves to learn about natural medicine from historical sources, modern research and the experience of people working with herbs. She finds herbs endlessly fascinating and loves that there is always more to learn. The potential for healing from plants is immense and humbling. Through her work she aims to share this.

Marge Clark

Marge Clark began her journey with aromatics by investigating and experimenting with herbal remedies and soaps for personal use in the 1980’s. It didn’t take long to realize this was a costly venture, as she did not have the space for gardening and had to rely on others to provide fresh and dried herbs. During that time, Marge discovered essential oils and found that she was captivated by their healing and balancing power—at first physically, next on a deeper level, emotionally. Marge began finding every book and article that was available on the subject and began experimenting. As often happens with emerging aromatherapists, friends and family members were her test subjects. Before long, friends were asking Marge to provide products for sale. Soon after, Marge began working out of a bedroom in her home, creating products.

In the early 1990’s, Marge found herself faced with disability. Liberated from the typical 40-hour work week, she was able to focus more on her two passions: essential oils and online community and communication. While Marge had been communicating with "friends she'd not met yet" online since the early 1980's, the bright, shiny World Wide Web was new to her. With encouragement from family and friends—and ingenuity on her part—Marge learned to design websites, one among them devoted to the safe and appropriate uses of the essential oils she loved; shortly thereafter, Marge began making her products available online as well.

Eventually, Marge’s hobby, born of her passion for essential oils, became a thriving small business. She soon found herself with her first staff members—and working out of a bedroom became a challenge. In 2002, Marge’s business, Nature’s Gift, moved to its own building.  In 2007, growth required moving to a larger building—and hiring an even larger staff.  In 2008, Marge published her book, Essential Oils and Aromatics. In 2014, Marge’s work Essential Waters: Hydrosols, Hydrolats & Aromatic Waters became available as an ebook only.

Over the years Marge has continued expanding her knowledge through mentors, personal research, and formal courses; Nature’s Gift has continued to flourish beyond her wildest imagination. What began as a hobby became a passion that still resonates within her to this day. Marge says her daughter described best what we do almost two decades ago: "Every day, all over the world, Marge sends out boxes full of joy and healing."

Rebeca Ledersnaider

Aromatherapy Educator

Born in a small town, in the middle of the Andes mountains, Rebeca’s adventures with aromas and flavors began at an early age, close to scents, magic herbs and essential oils. She accompanied her mother and grandmother in the preparation of jams, candies, cookies and cakes made from rose petals, rhubarb and Andean berries, among many others.

Rebeca’s mother had a little game she’d play before allowing Rebeca to taste the wonders from the kitchen: Rebeca had to first guess what they were made of by smelling them. The scents from the kitchen, flooded continually her home house and she was forever touched and changed by it.

Rebeca’s father owned a soap factory: he’d take Rebeca by the hand, guide her to a special room, incredibly aromatic and filled with huge containers of essential oils. She still remembers the amazing aromas of that room.

Years later, Rebeca began making simple preparations for friends and family. Fascinated with these experiences, she took aromatherapy classes and decided to use her knowledge in her practice as an occupational therapist, applying essential oils to blind and visually impaired people to help both their sensory stimulation and their ability to concentrate. Encouraged by the wonderful results she saw in her clients, she also began to prepare mixtures for other conditions including muscular aches and pains, arthritis, insomnia, and stress.

Over the years, Rebeca expanded both her experience and her knowledge as she studied different approaches with different teachers and, in turn, began teaching in different schools and universities.

After years passed and she moved away from her mountains, she landed in a valley over a lake where she opened her own school, Shaktili Aromaterapia (Aromacademia) dedicated to promoting and offering the best aromatherapy education in Mexico.

AnneLise Lentz

Devoted Mother, Certified Health Coach, Natural Living Enthusiast

AnneLise Lentz is a devoted mom, natural living enthusiast, and personally-empowered lifestyle blogger. Together with her husband, Kurt, she has three children—Max, 4, Addy, 11, and Sophia, 15—who are the greatest loves of her life.

AnneLise was born in Sri Lanka to parents who worked across Asia in conjunction with the humanitarian aid foundation her father founded. Because of their work, AnneLise had the opportunity to visit India, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Indonesia. When they moved from Sri Lanka to Singapore, AnneLise began learning Chinese as a second language.

AnneLise’s experiences developed her compassion for those less fortunate in the world, particularly refugees and orphans. When her family returned to America, her father founded another organization that helped Kurdish refugees resettle in Nashville, Tennessee. On many occasions, AnneLise spent the night with her new Kurdish friends learning to appreciate their culture and expand her horizons. Her experiences not only deepened and expanded her knowledge of the world, but also intensified her compassion for those impacted so personally by war and natural disaster.

After attending David Lipscomb University where she studied child psychology, AnneLise moved to California. During her time there, she developed a passion for nutrition, holistic health and wellness, and a deep love for being a “California Girl.”

Having enthusiastically embraced using essential oils as part of her natural lifestyle, AnneLise was eventually introduced to more conservative and safe essential oil use via her connection to essential oil safety advocates on social media. When she found herself fighting for her life after an adverse reaction to an essential oil blend led to systemic anaphylactic shock and hospitalization, AnneLise emerged as the victim of extraordinary social media backlash and a survivor with an important story to share.

AnneLise is nearing completion of her studies in nutrition and looks forward to marrying her insights on nutritional wellness with her recently founded blog, “Cali Mama Lifestyle,” through which she shares the lessons she’s learned through her study and life experience. It’s her hope that she can share her hard-won practical knowledge and experience to help others avoid mistakes commonly made in the engagement of natural remedies and skin care.

Shirley & Len Price

After attending several aromatherapy courses (1971-74) Shirley opened her school in 1977. She was the first to examine students (after 6 months) and also to teach selection of essential oils for individual clients. By 1998 she had 14 teachers in Britain and 5 abroad (Australia, Norway, Southern Ireland, Switzerland and USA), specially trained by her over a three-week period. Len also became fascinated with essential oils, qualifying in 1979 with Pierre Franchomme and Shirley Price; he was therefore invaluable as an examiner and teacher. His enthusiasm for the essential oils prompted him to dedicate time to researching data, in French as well as English. The couple’s main aims were to source genuine essential oils, give thorough education in their understanding as well as use, and encourage unity among the associations, leading to common and high standards for the whole profession. Both helped initiate the IFA and founded ISPA (now IFPA, of which they were made Honorary Members). In 2011 Shirley was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the AIA in recognition of her dedication to professionalism in aromatherapy. They have spoken at conferences – and lectured – in twelve countries, as well as hospitals in the UK, Eire and Australia, Len’s sense of humour endearing him to students and aromatherapists alike.

Shirley has written seven aromatherapy books, her first (Practical Aromatherapy (1983) being in 21 languages. Len has written two; Carrier Oils in Aromatherapy (1999) and Understanding Hydrolats (2004). Together they wrote Aromatherapy for Health Professionals (1995), the scientific references of which greatly increased over the next three editions. Before starting on the fifth edition, Shirley sent her new book “Aromaflexology” to be published by Riverhead. Len and Shirley will never retire from their interest in aromatherapy, Shirley continuing to lecture and write – and – they play table tennis every morning!

Wendy Robbins

Wendy Robbins, BBA, Cert. Aroma, first experienced the emotional and physical benefits that essential oils provide two decades ago. She quickly fell in love with holistic aromatherapy. However, Wendy also immediately discovered that there was a great deal of conflicting and concerning information being disseminated online regarding aromatherapy and essential oils. While aromatherapy can significantly enhance our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, it is important to Wendy to help educate and promote essential oil safety and the realistic benefits of holistic aromatherapy.

Armed with her growing passion and knowledge of holistic aromatherapy and with her background in Web development and marketing, Wendy was inspired to create AromaWeb in 1997. Since its beginnings, AromaWeb has grown to become a frequently referenced educational aromatherapy Web site that supplies extensive content and coverage of the field of holistic aromatherapy and essential oil usage. Wendy also serves as the Marketing Manager for Natural Sourcing, LLC, a leading natural ingredient supplier, and its trademarked brand, From Nature With Love.

Each blend is formulated with the intent to heal the condition, not just the symptoms, as well as provide aromatic interventions, specifically under stress. This process involves looking deeply into a person’s psychopathy and designing blends in order to fit receptor sites for healing and mood enhancement. Michael uses over 600 essential oils that he has collected and promotes through his “Library of Fragrance.”

In 2000 Michael helped create an Aromatic fragrance, “World Sensorium” that was released in over 200,000 scent strips over Time Square at midnight on December 31st, 1999. World Sensorium is a single complex scent comprised of culturally associative aromatic phytogenic materials of world flora experienced in the olfactory domain, formulated on population percentages and was created from over 100 essential oils.

Michael currently divides his time between formulating, writing, lecturing, consulting, product development, essential oil research and resourcing essential oils worldwide.  His specialty subject is in the understanding and communication of how fragrance impacts our psychology, through the senses, in our decision making through 30,000 aromatic molecules found in nature.
